The Conservative Party has confirmed its intention to retain the new streamlined planning process for major infrastructure projects established under the current Government.
The Party’s new energy policy paper – Rebuilding Security
– accepts that modern energy provision is impossible without an effective planning system. The new planning provisions for nationally significant infrastructure projects, which came into full effect only this month, would therefore be retained under a Conservative administration – but with new checks and balances. The Infrastructure Planning Commission would be brought within the Planning Inspectorate, National Planning Statements would be ratified by Parliament, and final decisions on major infrastructure projects would be made by the Secretary of State – all with a view to giving increased democratic accountability.
Jane Hirst, Director of NLP, commented “As always, what our clients want is to work within a certain and stable framework. This statement by the Conservatives will give energy providers the confidence to continue with major applications knowing that, in the event of the Tories coming to power, the system will not be pulled from beneath them.”
