Planning permission has been granted for a new chapel, convent and teaching facilities in the grounds of a grade II* listed theological College, Ripon College Cuddesdon, located in the Oxfordshire Green Belt. The College, built in 1854, trains students for ordination in the Church of England. It was designed by George Edmund Street, a leading 19th century gothic architect, who designed the Royal Courts of Justice.
The new buildings will secure the long term future of the College. The Sisters of Begbroke will also relocate to the College to provide spiritual direction and counselling to the College and community.
NLP Director, Iain Rhind, commented "This scheme shows that sensitive design can overcome significant site constraints. Whilst the scheme is in the green belt the Council accepted our case for very special circumstances and English Heritage agreed with our assessment that the heritage and landscape effects of the development were acceptable."
