Government has taken further steps towards creating local enterprise partnerships to replace Regional Development Agencies, heralding a new role for business.
A letter from Vince Cable and Eric Pickles has invited proposals from groups of council and business leaders to set up partnerships, intended to provide strategic leadership to steer local economic growth, and with a focus on rebalancing the economy towards the private sector. Although seeking equal representation from the public and private sector, the letter seeks leadership from “a prominent business leader”.
“This is an exciting opportunity for the private sector, including many of our clients, to take a joint lead in planning for economic growth” commented NLP Director Matthew Spry,. “A horizontal structure where civic and business leaders sit side by side in leading enterprise is a pragmatic model – we wait with interest to see how the details of these partnerships emerge when the White Paper is published this summer.”
